Description

HST stands for Hyper Sonic Transport and denotes an aircraft capable of mach 5 (3,300 mph) or above. I built this model from a drawing I did when I was 21 years old back in 1977. I doubted even then that this would actually be capable of flight without massively strong advanced materials and computer power. I thought back then that an HST might be in service by 1996 and HSTs were thought by the aerospace industry to be the logical follow on to SSTs. That is until the Boeing 2707 SST (Super Sonic Transport) was cancelled in 1971. However, SST research continued and still does to this day but we seem to be nowhere near an operational commercial SST. So this is another retro future idea of mine being realized in 3D along with an SR-71 model I found on the internet. The HST is 96 meters (315 feet) long vs the 33 meter (107 foot) long SR-71. Both craft are about 95,000 feet altitude (18 miles/29 Km). We might see some kind of HST by the mid 2060s. The HST is still climbing to its service ceiling of 35 miles.

Thanks, it wasn't easy bringing my 2D drawing to 3D life.

Very cool idea to use an SR-71 as a chase plane! Very nice design work on your HST.

Thanks, it seemed the logical choice since the SR71 would be the next fastest craft if an HST existed, not to mention its altitude capability.

Thanks, I'd always wanted to see one of my old drawings updated in 3D.

Thank you. It took a bit of doing to get the SR-71 shadow to hit the HST.

Well done - The fly in the ointment is how to shield the passengers and crew from the cosmic rays and other radiation found at 35 miles up.

When I did this thing...I assumed the materials and other advances would make it possible. That was 1977 and I don't think were any closer now than we were then to a machine like this. Radiation would be a problem for sure.
