Point blank, Helle's a total source of joy to me. She brings me constant laughter and love, all the time. She sends me art all the time---which makes me feel enormously guilty that I get to see her WIP's, experiments and new pieces before most others do---half of which she considers "awful" (her words!) but which are pure magic. More than once, I've urged her to post her 'rejects', assuring her that her fans will love them. She did, and as predicted, her fans loved them. They always do.
Her gallery (helanker) is magic and has so much range: Pastels, acrylics, watercolors, drawings, digital montages, physical collages...serious along with playful, child-like along with adult-like...and she pops in with something new constantly, making her fans wonder "where in the world does she get all these inspirations???" They're beautiful, articulate and magic, and I think she was a dancer in a previous life because her art's filled with not only the discipline and hard work of a dancer, but also with their weightless joy and freedom. To me, her gallery's a big joyful dance.
Personally, to have Helle 'behind' you---ie, watching out for you---is like having a team of cheerleaders cheering you on, or a doctor and nurse ready to catch you should you fall, or a team of dancers, artists and musicians ready to put on a performance for you---in just the way she tells a story, her sheer delight---that reminds you that the purpose of this life is joy, no matter what else happens.
And she's become family to me---though I've never been to Denmark: Her husband and 2 sons and grandchildren, brothers and relatives are all part of my life now. And her place on the North Sea is like a second stomping ground to me. And I mean, think of it: "The North Sea," to a Midwesterner, is an icy wilderness where people wear bearskins and horns, hunt with iron spears, and eat raw meat from the dragons who live under the tundra. But it's not that at all: It's a gentle, rolling place, hand-made made for Helle...it's as sweet as she is, and as beautiful and kind.
So, dear Helle, I wish you a wonderful birthday, and tell you you're one of the gemstones of my life. And if, by some horrid mistake of the imagined afterlife, you got sent to 'hell' instead of heaven: I'd go to hell in a heartbeat, to be in the same place as you. Because if a "heaven" excluded you, it couldn't be heaven; and then, if hell actually existed, they'd send you there to remind the whole universe that joy's been everywhere, if one just bothered to look...Happy Birthday, dear friend, and many many more, in joy and endless inspiration,
with love and gratitude from the bottom of my heart, Mark

I saw these on my phone first (as you know) and couldn't WAIT to get in here and see them full size! My god. They're all three absolutely gorgeous. I saw the first one and was struck by the planes of light, of metal, of SHAPE ... pure light and shape. Like bits of something floating under water, maybe ice cubes. Man, it was beautiful. Then the second one struck me dumb. The wave, that endless wave, with the world in bits floating on top of it, just blew me away. I don't know if you can ever top that one ... it's just stunning, and green has to be my all-time favorite color. The final piece, though, with the sun coming out ... that's Helle for sure. It's full of joy and delight, the waves of the world crashing to the shore from the pure excitement of it all. Helle lights up the world. It's so weird that she's such a crappy judge of her own artwork and whether it's any good or not. All I can say is, "Thank heavens she's got you to tell her to POST these things!" I mean ... she's totally inspiring. She has a random thought, and by the time it gets out and gets halfway around the world to me, it changes the course of my art for a month! I wouldn't do half the stuff I do if it weren't for her "little" ideas and her "awful" artwork. Helle has been inspiring me for as long as I've been here ... let's see ... it's been just a week or so short of eight years now. I used to try to BE her, artistically speaking, but dammit, everything I did looked like me and nothing like Helle. So she's also taught me to be myself as an artist, now matter how much I like somebody else's work. And that everything isn't as easy as she makes it look. And she's taught me to value my own work, because all the times I tell her how good she is (and I'm not always believed, believe me!), I have to listen to myself and take my own advice and say, "Well, I like this thing I've done, so it's good, whether anyone else likes it or not!" Happy Birthday, Dearest Helle. You are a bright spot, an inspiration, a motivation. I hope your year is filled with love and light and more wonderful art!

Absolutely impossible to follow Tara's comments (or yours, for that matter, Mark! LOL!) So I have to agree with everything she said; you have built a whole new world for Helle's celebration, and it's stunning. Happy birthday, Helle, and I hope it will be a wonderful year for you!

Mark, this is one of the most creative and thoughtful birthday presentation anyone could come up with. Each image in the series devoted to Helle is spectacular and your thoughts on the friendship you two share was moving. Apologies for short comments, but it can't be helped tonight.

Dearest Mark. I have been stunned ALL day. Yes, I have been walking around your most fantastic 3 uploads and your way too heartwarming words for me ALL day. ALL this day. You have totally knocked me out and every time I try to write something clever here, I cannot find words. I dont deserve all this. I really dont, but it warms my heart more than I can express... but I feel like I receive something that doesnt belong to me. Your first one makes me think about a huge gemstone under water that has a surface of melting ice and then I see a landscape under a thin layer of clouds and when I go away from zoom, a beautiful face is watching me :-) I dont know how you can make such wonders, but it must be your beautiful soul that helps you create this. Bless it :)) Your second beautiful, wawing, green, pure beauty makes me really stunned. I see the dancing green waves of pure happiness, which make me hear the Nutcracker Suite so clealy. I have been with this pieces severel times today and every time I see it, I hear this piece of music in my mind. Cant help it. I just love that. Your thirth. OH MAN! A brand new world of beauty with the sun far behind it (the orb). It makes me want to dive into this world to explore all its beauty. I am glad I can zoom and get some of these fantastic details. It is almost like diving in. I see hills with pine forests, I see landscapes and harbours and deep oceans. I see ice and clouds. I wonder which creatures are living there :-) Mark, my dear friend. Thank you ever so much for all this beauty and also thank you a 1000 times for your wonderful words, even though I dont deserve them. Thank you SO much. :ยด-))))))

Great rendition of what the earth would look if it was truly transparent, Mark. In the light of my feeling like hell lately, I don't have the time or straight-from-the-heart expertise to emulate or equal the novellas presented above. As it is, I'm struggling just to reach my coming birthday on Tuesday. All I can say is a job well done with these three dramatic postings in this stunning triptych birthday dedication for your friend, helanker (helle), Mark.

Just when I thought I'd seen it all, you create this image. if only our world were so perfect, peaceful and beautiful. What a stunning gift for Helle. I don't know her, but I know her work and have read people's remarks about her. She must be one of those amazing women and one I'd love to know. What a glorious gift you've given her! Happy Birthday, Helle!!

What a world of beauty you have created to celebrate Helle's birthday. It seems a world well worth exploring and living in.
