Description
With the season still shining bright, I wanted to return to an old saying from my roots.
The title above is from the Hebrew, "observe and remember".
Another way of putting it: "Do not observe without remembering..."
I got several calls and letters, this season, from people who have suffered, had losses, gone through so much for sick loved ones, and so on. You already know of some of them here. Last night I got 2 emails from RR friends, one who was so very tired from caring for a sick family member, and another who's friend died suddenly, leaving her son alone. So let me rephrase the Rabbis, and say, let us remember those who went through this season with illness, loss, heaviness and exhaustion, and remember that the season can be very hard for people who endure this, while others are celebrating..."Observe and Remember were given by God in the same breath," said the Rabbis. "So let us also remember (zachor)..."
When I wrote about Christmas in the Middle Ages, some of you (understandably) weren't sure what I was saying. Well, I do that. I apologize for what may have been an overly heavy wish. But I was trying to say that, under the hoopla and canopies we've all built around Christmas, rests a quiet and precious mystery; of light flowing out of darkness, light appearing in the midst of unsureness and pain. That all of us, human and vulnerable as we are, are touched by that light whether we're Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, Islamic, Atheist, Agnostic, or anything else. It was a reminder to us all of the simple purity of light shining in the dark.
So to all of you who endured this season with suffering, or with exhaustion you couldn't describe, I wish you peace and uplift like a great flowing blanket (may it happen), and that love be returned to you in waterfalls without number. Shamor v'zachor---"let me remember as I observe"---that I may remember those whose pain never left them this season, or any other time of the year.
Thank you as always for visiting...
I'll be back later.
Peace,
Mark

To observe and to remember. We always must take time to think about the sense of life rather than dedicate only playing catch money, in vain. The images from abstract to actually feel a bad feeling inside.

As I scroll down from the top (not being able to fit the entire thing at once, of course), it feels like water washing down, cleansing, soothing. And then, suddenly ... light!! And from there down, it becomes exciting, uplifting. Like a brilliant, white-hot light in a cave, transforming what was formerly unseen into something so bright that it's unseen in a thoroughly different way. Beautiful!

Mark, your gallery serves as a beacon in the night for so many of us and you touch the heart of all around you. I'm going to keep this short as your words really moved me tonight and it is a struggle to type. I'll be sure and pray for your friend who is caring for the sick family member and is both physically and emotionally exhausted. This is something my family can relate to as we went through the same thing when my Dad was critically injured months ago and passed after a long period of suffering. Please let your friend know that it is important for them to reach out to their friends like you during this time and try to make even a little bit of time for themselves for healing. Thank you also for the kindness in which you described the situation Matthew is in right now, and for your prayers for him.

The images you create with you streams of color always blow me away. I scroll down, look at each section, and then, blam!! there's always a surprise at the end. This one perfectly matches the mood, and respects the feeling of others. Life hands us some pretty heavy load sometimes and I'm always amazed at how much people endure. You honor them with your words and images. For them, I wish peace and calm and a far better new year.

If an image can give a healing feeling, THIS can. I hope, all who are suffering, will read your words and feel this beautiful fall of wonderful colors and light, as a sooting and comforting whole. I can hear it.
