Description

This enormous and splendid Oak is in the grounds of West Hants Club, next door but one to my garden. It features in all my sunset shots, and has been a source of pleasure to me all my life. It was planted when the club was founded in 1926 as West Hants Lawn Tennis Club, when the courts were laid out by the family that still owns Stewarts' Garden Centres. The British Hard Court Championships were held there from 1928 to 1983, and I watched many famous players on those courts as a child. We did have an oak the same age in our garden, but thankfully it became diseased and we had it felled. It would be touching the house now, and I would have no garden whatsoever for lack of light. Unless decreed dangerous, it is now forbidden in this district to fell any tree thicker than a man's forearm , with enormous fines for transgression!.

How wonderful to have this beautiful old tree so close by, but not shading your garden! :)

I'm thinking that a lot of pixies and other little fae could easily hide in this during the spring and summer Wonderful capture, Andrea - love the way the branches just form an arch in the sky

Perhaps my favorite tree. I like the negative space formed by the branches and twigs. Nice capture of this wonderful old tree.

I'm glad to see they're protecting radiant creatures like this. It's beautiful. In zoom, we can see the sun on many of its branches. And it fans out of the shadows like royalty. Big beautiful pic, Andrea. And I know just what you mean about a tree being a blessed companion for many years. I know just what you mean. It's majestic.

What a magnificent tree! We have laws protecting trees here too, but it is fairly easy to get your tree decreed dangerous if you're determined, and lately there's been a lot of it. That makes me sad. I hope this big fellow stays hale and safe for a long time to come!
