Description
WOODMAN, spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I'll protect it now.
Twas my forefather's hand
That placed it near his cot;
There, woodman, let it stand,
Thy axe shall harm it not.
-----George Pope Morris
Apparently, it didn't work out that way in this case.
Captured back on 6/2/08, somewhere within the vast expanse of the neighborhood.
Not exactly the most appealing stump I've ever encountered. That, and it looks ossified.
Have a nice day.

Maybe time took its toll on this gnarled beast; it certainly has tons of character, and looks like it was pretty old when it came down. Great find and an excellent photo of the whorls and pits on this whitened wood!

One of the things about your shots is that you capture most unusual sights right in your neighborhood. You didn't go to Yellowstone or the Outback to get this. Yes, it's a terrific find (claude). I've seen lots of abandoned tree trunks, but this one is rare. It looks like an old skull worn by the ages (ossified, as you say). Or an aerial view of a big mound out west, worn by erosion. Or a resting mythic beast. It had to be there a long time to get that rounded appearance. And I don't want to forget the strange entity of a SIDEWALK---in back---totally lifted off the ground! Like the soil's too soft to handle it. The whole concrete area back there is lifted off the ground---it's just such a strange sight, next to this slumbering beast. The kind of thing you find so often, in your jaunts...Fine shot, fine juxtaposition. And, this being shot in June, it must've been an awfully dry June, because that grass is in need of nutrients! The grass makes the right bed for the tree, though. It's almost a piece of sculpture, in your hands. Fine capture, and very alive eyes.
