Description
Well this last piece is a very loose take-off of Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights"---only it's abstract, and I tried to infuse it with some of the intricacy and richness Harry finds in the world everyday...
To me, Harry (goodoleboy) has one of the broadest and bravest galleries here. I truly mean 'brave'. Those of you who know him know he has some of the most beautiful flower series on the site, along with gorgeous plant shots, antique car shots and on and on. It's a huge list...
But alongside that, he shoots shadows on concrete, old beat up shoes, tractor tracks, 3 leaves casting shadows at dawn, or giddy wild padlocks packed-in-and-doing-salsa-dances against abandoned posts. Why 'brave'? Because I've tried it a million times, and my shots sink through the ground. For me, Harry's a 'photographer's photographer', going about his business studying everything under the sun, while I'm looking for the photogenic and 'shoot-able'. He doesn't shy away because something's "ugly"---in fact, he's drawn to it to find its beauty. He tackles the "go away" and ornery subjects that most of us walk past; and he digs into them, wrestles with them, and assures them that all those gnarls, pock-marks and decay are hidden arias. He finds poetries in them. It takes guts to shoot concrete and old shoes, but he makes them into sonnets and ballets.
I also want to say something else: In his 80's, he's suffered the trials and assaults of age---assaults we all face sooner or later. They've descended on him, making his photography nearly impossible. It's been a daily brew of back problems, hip problems, leg problems and constant pain...In recent months, he could only go out for short walks, which is a major blow to any photographer, esp one who has to kneel, bend and twist. He also has a major gastro-intestinal condition, which thrusts him into a monk's diet, and strips away just about everything one's counted on as part of the pleasure of living...And eye surgery too; and the doctors' visits, and waiting, and revisits etc. Most of you know what it takes to carry a camera for 3 hours and lift it and kneel and lie on the ground...it's much harder when you're in pain. When it got so bad he couldn't go out many days, he studied and postworked old files. He's never stopped.
An old poetry teacher once said: "Stop waiting for inspiration: The poem's under your feet---are you brave enough to find it?" Yes. Harry is. I'm so grateful for his braving his health and finding the "poem" wherever he walks...he does it every day, posting subjects that will always be hard to make beautiful, but he makes them beautiful. Also, he leaves some of the best and most thorough comments we have here, for which I've also been very grateful. And lest I forget: He's a WWII veteran. He fought in the Pacific. That's a huge thing.
Harry, I take my hat off for your remarkable work, range and endurance. And those superlative comments even when I haven't commented in weeks. Your gallery is precious to me, and so are you for never giving up and for backing us with such commitment and eloquence. You're an inspiration. Happy Birthday and many more, with admiration, love, and gratitude, and wishes that the muses of beauty stay with you, while you show them that you've seen their universe and you haven't left out a grain. A blessed and wonderful Birthday and New Year to you, with the deepest gratitude and respect, Mark

What's this? I beat ShroomMagic and Denise to the spot with a comment? Will wonders never cease? And a comment of humongous gratitude in this wonderful birthday dedication, Mark, one with three postings, a feat rarely conducted as a dedication on Renderosity. I'm thanking you from the bottom of my ancient beating heart for all that you said and created in these fabulous postings. Picasso, eat your heart out. Now to the nitty gritty. Your vast art presentations suggest to me a fun house crammed full of layer upon layer of prismatic glass shards, each emanating their own particular shape and brand of color blending effects. Colors galore! This was a real tour de force for you to tackle, and it is appreciated beyond my limited vocabulary to express. Fate willing, I intend to carry on with my photo work, despite any physical obstacles meant to deter me. Thanks again, my friend.

I love seeing all three. It's a revelation, a gift, a shake-up surprise to see the progression. The (relatively) simple colors and shapes of the first, the limited color palette of the second, and somehow ... somehow! ... you combine and stir and come up with something so energetic and alive that it defies belief! I mean ... they're just colors and shapes, but this really DOES evoke Bosch. Depth and detail, layers and vignettes ... it's all there. Did you know there's a murder mystery series by Michael Connelly where the detective's name is Hieronymus Bosch? (Not the original artist. The series takes place in modern times. The detective's mother was an art lover.) He goes by Harry. Nice tie-in, huh? :)

Mark, you've outdone yourself with this 3-part series; the first is a full-bodied expression of mapitude (I made a new word, just for you ;))) The second reminds me of a geode of amethyst, sharp upthrusting crystals, as if you'd gone underground into some mysterious cave and found THE geode of the planet. Then you present the third, which is a Bosch, but a Bosch on drugs, a Bosch of the future, a visionary of other planets and civilizations...wow! What a vision! Happy birthday, Harry, I think Mark's got your number!

I was thrilled to see the two first for Harry. But this, this is So much. SO much in one image. Full Zoom is simply amazing. I see water. I see some tents, Mc Donalds signs, trees, streets, ripples and the most amazing colors and light. Absolutely fantastic. I am sorry Harry is struggling so much. I do hope he will be better in 2015. Happy Birthday, Harry and many more and I wish you better health in the new year.

Your image is very intricate, Mark. And marvelous. I see a never ending of signals and symbols. Like a 'calling' to the imagination of the viewer. They are an evolution of colors and shapes, and i see in all them many figures, many faces. Some, like if coming from the center of the earth in fire and swirling, swirling, till they reach the surface; Others, in the surface are shinning under the sky and sun. Many elements of nature are there. Curiously, tome, one figure is permanent in all pannels and it is a dancer in the center. But all is mixed in one in the third and then, i see Earth and Cosmus unified. You did a terrific progression and i see them all, like pieces of LIFE. The third image to me, is like a window framed with a blue circle of healing and It is a beautiful transparent 'stained glass' from where i can see all this. After reading what you wrote about Harry...his life, his fights and his great strenght and will, even when he feels more weak...but never curving in front of the adversities...i see his 'portrait' in this image! You did a strong and very powerful image and it is how i see that Harry was and is. Bravo to Harry and Bravo to you. Mark. Everything is dancing in one glorious joy and it is a feast! A FEAST for Harry and i can see how he is thrilled. Happy Birthday, Harry. May your day is filled with joy and i wish you a great year ahead with much health and all the best!

Mark, this series of amazing images you created was the ideal gift for a creative man like Harry. Your point is so well made about how Harry goes out and seeks out the opportunities that are out there and dares to take gambles that few others will. Because of people like Harry we are treated to a vision of the world that most people miss in their every day lives. Now allow me to say what a truly remarkable job you did on each one of these three works of art, and how you yourself took your own creativity to new heights.
