Description

This isn't my usual sort of thing, but I had the opportunity to do a photography session with a whole raft of miniatures, and I jumped at the chance to learn something new. We have a friend here at the park who is into toy soldiers and history. He collects, modifies, builds and paints many of these pieces himself. The work he does is impressive! It is Jack's tradition at the end of the year to set up a parade populated by these figures which reenacts the 1903 Delhi Durbar. Before this week, I had never heard of the Delhi Durbar, but Jack filled me in on a few details and I looked up the rest on Wiki. The Durbar was a celebration that was held in India in 1877 (Victoria), 1903 (Edward and Alexandra), and 1911(George and Mary), in honor of the new British monarch. The Wiki photograph that illustrates the 1903 Delhi Durbar is apparently the inspiration for the bit of the parade shown in this photo I took yesterday. How absolutely fascinating! One of those historical things that I probably once knew but discarded as my brain became full. No chance of a backup external hard drive at my age, I'm afraid. I love the way that your focus is on that magnificent mount. Our British ancestors were overbearing and arrogant but undeniably brave.

Well done, you acquitted yourself with honours! Two subjects I don't know anything about: miniatures and this bit of history. What a fascinating shot!

Clever shot, looks like a bigger image had the miniature effect.

This is very cool. I like this scene. It reminds me of one of my favorite childhood books, Kim, by Rudyard Kipling.

A wonderful capture. Your neighbor's attention to detail is quite impressive. The name Durbar can be found all over the Indian sub-continent. I have visited Durbar Squares in Delhi and Kathmandu. They are large plazas where politicians give speeches and protestors gather to voice their grievances. In Kathmandu you will also find the handicrafts vendors selling their wares in the square. Wishing you, Bill and Mandy a new year filled with new adventures, health and happiness.

Well, that appears to be quite a gathering, indeed! It's not that easy to get a great table-top photo of something like this, but you've certainly pulled it off beautifully here, Tara! Of course that doesn't surprise me at all! HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and Bill!

With Rod, yes, it's not easy to photograph something like this; but yes, it's no surprise that you did it so well. I didn't know that "durbar" was as common, in India, as it is (from Mark, our resident world traveler---you and Bill being the domestic version) (well, maybe the international version eventually), and I loved Andrea's comment , as well as her remark on the historical British, at least the ones that took over a big chunk of the world. As for the picture, I imagine you did get a big opportunity with this: It's macro shooting, but the immense detail---this is crowd shooting, any way you cut it---makes it a very special specie. Your concentration on the big royal mount (on the elephant) is wholly natural; and you got real detail and light on the magnificent models your friend assembled here. Amazing that he does everything from modifying to building these models: Model work like this isn't easy. The crowd around the elephant is in soft-focus, making the elephant stand out; and I really like the umbrellas and how they shoot through the mix and overtake the shot. Given your title, you cropped it just right....Fine job with a difficult subject. This kind of shooting eludes me utterly. (And btw, "Delhi Durbar" sounds like a bar in Delhi where they serve fresh Dur. "You ever been to the Delhi Durbar"? "No---but I'm not a fan of Dur." "Oh, they have a LOT more than Dur there, trust me...") Takes guts to tackle subjects like these.
