Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

What a face!! Spooky with a smile is the most unnerving mixture! It will get a reaction from every viewer. It looks 100% an ARR production, excellent clay work and shot! I loved working with clay whenever I've had a chance. It's all the work after it's sculpted to get a finished piece that makes me respect anyone who does it! A friend of mine makes bespoke bonsai pots, it takes so long with so much care, skill and electricity!

the face of 2015, a corker. I have a new computer now, an appleMac, so a whole new learning curve for me, such a joy to write a line or two without checking every letter, happy new year Andrea.

I get to comment on this as art. Your masks and other related pieces have an air of Oceanic and Native American and African masks and statues. The accentuated eyes, nostrils and lips, etc, the way the whole face resonates around each feature as waves do around a pebble dropped in their midst---those old myth-artists saw a gaze as a protrusion into the universe, which set everything into motion. In the Pacific Northwest, the artists put such design into cheeks and chins---any open surface demanded isobars and energies, everything was in motion around the eyes and lips, etc. You get all that in your masks and statues...but you also have humor. There's always play. The few people I've shown this to were both delighted and shocked (I pulled off a cloth, so they could see it suddenly, not gradually, the mask is sudden, it grabs us): They were stunned and totally delighted. "It won't stop staring at me," said a friend, "and it's so much fun!" I love the varying hues, even if some of them were byproducts of firing or of aging; and the wart, and your usual crease lines, and great pointy ears too. You get the meeting between mythic and funny without any tension between the two---the two are in harmony, they never vie. Do you know how hard that is? In writing, it's sometimes very hard for me to do humor and serious in the same piece. It's walking a narrow ridge. An impish piece of magic straight out of the comedia del arte where whole characters were created by simply putting on a mask...wonderful! And btw, the placement against the diagonal slats of the table is just right, too...
