Description
If you travel south through Utah along Highway 163 just before the Arizona border you will cross Monument Valley Road. It is a short road with one end at The View overlooking Monument Valley in Arizona and the other end just seven miles away at Goulding’s Lodge in Utah.
Harry Goulding and his wife Leone, who he called ‘Mike’ because it was easier for him to spell, came to Monument Valley in 1923. They came to live and work among the native peoples and to set up a trading post. They gained the trust of the people and set up their trading post in 1928. The original building is now Goulding’s Museum. By the 1930’s Hollywood was making movies in the Valley and the Gouldings built their lodge to accommodate the cast and crew. As a result they became friends with many of the Hollywood stars of the time. The lodge register is on display in the museum and there you can see the signatures and doodles of movie stars, writers and directors.
The image below shows part of the old trading post and some of the inventory the Gouldings carried.
