Description

One of my favourite camelias and a strong grower. It is a HIgo type, the flowers of the Samurai. This variety was first bred in 1695, one of the oldest known. It fell from favour in Japan because of its habit of replacing its 110 stamens with petaloids, but this won it the RHS Award of Merit here in 1953.

Domo Arigato, Andrea-san. One of the classic (or perhaps clichéd) scenes in Japanese cinema is that of the tragic lovers in the snow. The young samurai is usually holding a camellia just before death overtakes them. After he dies the flower falls onto the snow covered ground signifying the death of youth. I always wondered what that flower was. Gorgeous color on this beautiful example and pin sharp.
