Description

The Laber Bergbahn in Oberammergau was built in 1957 and is what the Germans call 'a Grosskabinen Zweiseil Umlaufbahn', the last operating one of its kind in the world. The cable is 2021 m (~6,630-ft) long, and the elevation difference is 784 m (~2,572-ft), from 900 m at the base to 1,684 m at the top. The Laber Bergbahn is not the highest in the Bavarian Alps, but the most popular. On clear days it provides a beautiful view of Oberammergau, and to the north of many lakes as far away as Munich, Kloster Etal, towards Linderhof, and the German and Austrian high Alps to the south. It has a small restaurant at top (unfortunately no credit cards are accepted) but if serve some good food. I had lintel soup with wieners and a Gluehwein, a spiced and fortified either white or red wine, served scathingly hot. Perfect for warming the hands and innards. When I arrived in Oberammergau from Zurich, there was no snow at all in the foothills, except going into Germany from Reutte past the Plansee. The elevation there is about 3,500-ft, but even there the road was clear. I was bummed out, but on the 26th it began to snow, lightly, the visibility went down to next to nothing - and it kept snowing- on and off for a week. This was on the third day since it began snowing and the temperature was 12F, about -11C with a stiff breeze. The Laber is popular with snowboarders and skiers, and the snowboarders usually go straight down, what looks to be at least 45 degrees. Their goal is to get as many runs out of their day passes as possible. This picture was taken on 29 December 2014, Sig..

This photo is very interesting to me. You have captured so well the beautiful and exciting snowfall in lovly shades of grey and then popped close to center stage just a bit of color in with the green snowpants of the skier. Very nicely done.
