I am 58 years young, live in Johannesburg, South Africa and I'm a true product of my continent. I love the bush, the animals, sunshine, sunsets - oh well, anything to do with nature. I am unmarried and have three sons - 37, 33 and 30 respectively and three granddaugters aged 12, 6 and 4 respectively and obviously the light of my life! Photography has always been a passion and I have loved it since I can remember. I was still using a SLR camera and only switched to digital only in late 2007! My other passion is travel and I have been lucky enough to have travelled fairly widely. There are however still many, many places I would love to visit "one day." I am truly an amateur photographer and do it merely as a hobby. So please be gentle when you comment on my work. :-) Thank you Piet, my dear friend, for convincing me to place my work on Renderosity. You owe me one! Hugs, Carin xx

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight........" as they say!

An amazing set of pictures. What luck for you. So much for the Kumbaya moments that we see on the nature channels where all the animals peacefully drink together from the water hole.

I didn't realize that jackals are so much smaller than hyenas; amazing that you got to witness and capture this interaction!

I'm very impressed by this event as I always thought the Hyena was more powerful and dangerous. Great set of photos
Faemike55
and as I understand it, hyenas are not noted for their 'gentle' nature!

What shots! There's something to learn from jackals (and hyenas too)...especially in terms of not really recognizing size differences. Jackals are like that though, which is probably why the ancient Egyptians venerated them enough to convince themselves that one of their most important gods was a sleek, not entirely large thing. I love the action in these shots and the "I'm-tough" aspect of the jackal coupled with the "oh-just-go-away-you-annoying-person" expression the hyena is wearing. Nature reveals so much, and rare glimpses like these are worth more than pure gold, but when you stop and think about it: hyenas and jackals are living things, gold is just...well...mercury with the wrong number of electrons in the wrong place.
