Description

When visiting the Kgalagadi in late 2013 I went on a game drive one morning by myself. I stopped at one of the watering holes and waited for animals to come to the water. At about 11 am, long past the golden hours for photography, I spotted in the vehicle's rear view mirror a creature coming towards the water. Lo and behold - it was a Brown Hyena - an animal I have never seen in the wild before. Needless to say - I was so excited. Now at this watering hole are two local jackals that "guard" the water. When they saw the hyena approaching, they immediately started intimidating him and chasing him away. He did run off but made a wide circle and returned - his thirst must have been greater than his fear. I also later saw on my photos that he appeared to have some small wounds on the side of his face. These three photos (and I took 72 images of this episode in just over 5 minutes) shows how the jackal is trying to intimidate the hyena. This jackal in the photos actually bit his legs that made the big fellow snarl at him a few times. I will post more images of this encounter. It is a very rare sighting and I was thrilled to have had the privilege to see this happening. The neatest part was that I was the only human that morning at the waterhole and had the show just for myself!

An amazing set of pictures. What luck for you. So much for the Kumbaya moments that we see on the nature channels where all the animals peacefully drink together from the water hole.

I didn't realize that jackals are so much smaller than hyenas; amazing that you got to witness and capture this interaction!

I'm very impressed by this event as I always thought the Hyena was more powerful and dangerous. Great set of photos

and as I understand it, hyenas are not noted for their 'gentle' nature!

What shots! There's something to learn from jackals (and hyenas too)...especially in terms of not really recognizing size differences. Jackals are like that though, which is probably why the ancient Egyptians venerated them enough to convince themselves that one of their most important gods was a sleek, not entirely large thing. I love the action in these shots and the "I'm-tough" aspect of the jackal coupled with the "oh-just-go-away-you-annoying-person" expression the hyena is wearing. Nature reveals so much, and rare glimpses like these are worth more than pure gold, but when you stop and think about it: hyenas and jackals are living things, gold is just...well...mercury with the wrong number of electrons in the wrong place.
