Description

Following the images of yesterday, here is another image of the hyena without the jackals in the frame. He eventually climbed into the water and then had his fill without interference. If you zoom you will see the wounds on his cheek and it seems under his ear as well. Seconds after this shot he ran away. I cannot describe the thrill of witnessing something like this. It is nature at its best. All that is between you and this dangerous and wounded creature is a rolled down SUV window. (so you can take photos) I truly am grateful for being able to experience these animals in the wild.

I had a close encounter with two of their cousins - cannot believe how big they are... Maybe I was just scared!

I understand hyenas to be pack animals, he's a loner, could be an outcast defeated in a fight by another dominant male, and rejected from the clan, it sometimes happens to lions too when these creatures get too old, shame that their security is removed like that, I suppose it's human nature that would not allow us to treat a relative in the same manner eh? Although memory serves of a dominant female I could have easily banished years ago LOL!! Fantastic shot you got here Carin.

Great shot and experience. I never realized how handsome these creatures are until looking closely at this shot.

I was wondering if the poor thing ever got to drink. Thanks for the update and the fantastic picture. A very handsome face. Having been to Kenya I can understand the thrill you felt.

Very impressive capture and narrative. I noticed that his left ear appears to have been torn up a bit in an earlier battle for their reputation, he is a very handsome creature

Amazing how much his face looks like a dogs face. But his fur, well it looks almost like one of the kittens we are feeding. The forest cat. A really amazing shot.

Poor gut sure had to go through a lot for a drink of water. Glad you were able to get this shot of him too.

Hyenas are such interesting creatures; they are definitely regal and refine and perfectly suited to being hyenas, and they're oddly cuddly in that cute from a distance sort of way, and that's all because humans see things with big, pointy teeth and massively powerful jaws and we get all mushy; that's why we have teddy bears and not teddy mice. Not back to hyenas: what a gorgeous creature, even with the battle scars that are hopefully healing. What a shot. I love the way you captured so much detail. I really like the massive load of earth tones and the warmth such colors imply. This is a handsome creature.
