Description
As I am gearing up for a new baby season, I have gone back thru some of my older pictures. This little Red Fox was found wondering around under a shed. She was more than a little hungry. She was about 10 weeks old. I have found that a red fox kit will sometimes refuse to eat. They will eat from their mothers mouth in the wild. I have learned the call that a mother makes when she is calling her kits. The best remedy I have found for the ones that do not eat is to vanilla yogurt, on my chin. I put it there, lay on the floor and call the kit. They will come running and lick every drop off my face. After that, I am mom. Yes, I know that I need to keep them wild, but first I need to keep them alive. I have said many times, these babies grieve. I have to find a way to give them the security they have lost. Like all of my orphans, this little girl loved me. She also was very frightened of all other people. I am mom, everyone else, well they are the monsters.

She is SO cute! "Who am I?". Good question. I doubt if I can even answer that question. How many of us can? But you can, to this little one, with the yogurt on your chin. I'd love to see you work with these little ones. Every time I read your posts I learn something new. But the question of "mom" is the central theme for all young animals. By the way, I've finished reading "The Emotional Lives of Animals" by Marc Bekoff. It ends with a plea for better understanding of animals as sentient/feeling creatures not that different from us. They want to be friends with humans, if only humans let them! Communication and interpreting that is the big problem. You seem to have that down pat! For my part, I'm re-reading my cat books and looking at YouTube segments on cat behavior and feelings in the quest to better understand what Kitty needs and wants. She was quite scared of the vacuum cleaner today, but let me pet her and play a bit with her afterwards. I do hope she understands what all the noise was about - making the apartment cleaner for us both. Looking forward to your next post! Keep up the good work! And I'll try to find an answer to "Who Am I?" :-)
