Description

I'm reading a book suggested by a viewer of my last post, "The Cruel Sea", by Nicholas Monsarrat. His narrative is the day to day life of a Flower-class Corvette crew as they break in their new ship and become a coherent crew performing convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. If anything, my take on the book so far is that what I would consider a harrowing, terror filled, assignment is accepted as challenging, uncomfortable, dangerous, and stress filled, but their everyday task. It is interesting how much our fragile species can adapt to. Anyway, a terrific read and I thank the person who mentioned it. I don't have the rough seas out of my system yet, so here is another render of the HMS Bluebell forging it's way through the inclement weather of the Atlantic. From some accounts and films that I've seen, this level of "inclement" is nothing compared to what the North Atlantic threw at those who dared set out on her. I am definitely not a sailor! HMS Bluebell: I can't say enough about what a terrific ship model this is by rjordan. I tweaked the textures as is my wont, of course. Available at active-rendering.de . Crew enjoying the good weather and foul weather gear: Epici low poly figure Lw0R1 with Tryphon's RN gear (thank you again, Luis) and other bits from here and there. Poser7, Vue6Infinite, Ps Cs3

Fantastic image! I hope everyone is doing the full size view. I can imagine, how many work it is to do the water splashes and weather... must have been hours (or days). From time to time I try to do sea scenes by my own, with your standard in my mind. But never reach your profession.

Thanks for the mention. Glad the book inspired you. It was a nightmare read for me, too. I recall an Atlantic crossing in August 1963. The waves were so huge the liner's propellers were out of the water after the ship plunged into each new wave (which washed up over the bridge!). Rolling up to 45 degrees! The last night we narrowly missed a tornado at sea. A most memorable crossing in the negative sense. I've also had a really bad ferry crossing of the Baltic back in 1997, the worst the captain had ever experienced. Most passengers lying on the floor vomiting as they couldn't sit or stand. The sea is no playground. I've read an account of the sinking of the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst hear the North Cape (off Norway) - mountainous waves and ice building up on board - an extremely dangerous situation (risk of capsizing). No chance of saving a man over board - he'd be frozen dead in the 2 degree water in a minutes time. And with ice, a pitching deck and freezing water, it's no place anyone would want to be. It puts a perspective on the hardships and sacrifices made by seamen of all countries during WWII. Great image. It gives a good idea of what it can be like in a storm at sea. :-)

A wonderfully atmospheric scene with excellent seas! The book was made into a film in the 1950's - worth watching. 'In which We Serve' is another good one too, about life on a British destroyer.

Hey Bill... good to keep on a theme at times and work out a series like this... another wonderful action capture of what I think most of us would not be able to handle. Keep'em coming

I also read the book. Just think what it was like in a U-boat in that weather - they had to surface as snorkels turn into torture devices in rough seas.
