Mars and Venus are terraformed; Earth is an irrelevant backwater. When the Martian Empire and the Asteroid Belt Confederation go to war, Earthborn Lieutenant Commander Walker Tsume receives command of the Martian corvette Odin and a barely qualified crew. Walker has had a mixed career. His superiors consider him brilliant but undisciplined. Modifying his ship's systems in defiance of orders, Walker leads Odin and its crew on a perilous mission to Jupiter's moons. They uncover corruption in military datastreams and treason within the Imperial Martian Navy. When the Battle of Jupiter begins, only Odin can prevent defeat and the stop the traitors' escape. Deep in the atmosphere of Jupiter itself, the final confrontation plays out as Walker must face his greatest fear -- losing a ship and crew to Jupiter for a second time.
