Description

The Messerschmitt Me 163 'Komet' was a rocket-powered fighter aircraft designed by Alexander Lippisch. The Me 163 was planned as an interceptor. The engine thrust of the powered rocket enabled the plane to reach a speed of almost 1000 km/h and a rate of climb (3.35 minutes to 12,000 m) unheard of at the time. However, the duration of the burning period of the engine was very short so that the pilot had to attempt the return flight on a glide. The thrust was produced by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with hydrazine hydrate dissolved in methanol. This was risky and resulted in numerous lethal accidents, for example, explosions due to hard landings. Technical Data: Manufacturer: Messerschmitt AG, Augsburg Number built: 370 Wing span: 31-ft (9.32 m) Length: 19.7-ft (5.98 m) Maximum take-off weight: 4,000 kg Maximum speed: 950 km/h Rate of climb to 12,000 m: 3.35 min Burning period of engine: 7.5 min Power plant: Walter HWK 109-509 Adjustable thrust: 1.47-16.6 kN (150-1700kp) Armament: Two 30mm cannon This picture was taken on 30 December 2014, Sig...

It's a good thing the Germans didn't have reliable solid fueled strap-on rockets to get this thing off the ground. It would have done a lot more damage.
