A great photo, but oh, those depressing buildings!

When did they put skyscrapers up in Antarctica? I can imagine the lone hiker here traveling through a frozen, post-apocalyptic world on a heroic quest to save the remnants of humanity. It also reminds me very much of the snow scenes in a future, barren Manhattan in the film "12 Monkeys". I would have felt compelled to straighten the horizon, but the tilt does give it an added dynamic element...

Superb image, the feeling that give this image speaks by itself !!!

Marvelous capture !!!

This stunning composition reveals the lovely blue color cast by the sky upon the endless landscape of snow, punctuated by the innumerable pockets of dark contrast textures, as it recedes into the far distance, Mark. The determined lonely trekker (just who is that dude?) and skyscrapers, with their deep contrast, add stark punch to this veritable Antarctic scene. This is a real winner. And still another one of your area biggies that covered my ample living room wall.

WONDERFUL WORK!

That's the lake? That he's walking on? How do you know where the lake ends and the land begins? Do you have to wait for spring to figure that out? What an apocalyptic landscape, and incredibly beautiful!!!!

Amazing landscape. One tip would be to keep the camera level next time.

Ummm ... the picture doesn't need to be straightened, because it's already straight. I mean ... the buildings go up and down, right? (the Hancock notwithstanding) The curved shore isn't even with the far horizon in real life, and if you made that a straight line, the buildings would lean and fall over, and then you'd have thousands of Midwesterners screaming bloody murder at you. "Put the freakin' picture back the way it belongs, a$$h*ole! We're dyin' here!" I love the diagonal of the snow line with the guy taking up the smaller, left-hand wedge, and the buildings taking up the larger, right-hand wedge. What a terrific picture!

Mark, this is truly an awe inspiring photo that at least for me is an instant favorite. While others may not care for the buildings and how they contrast with the snow for myself it is a true delight. You manage to take photos that show the beauty in almost any area, and you seem to have a sense of what time of day is right to take these captures to give you perfect lighting.

Heading for a warm coffee and donuts...hmm, must be a cop...maybe even a water cop, but his boat is...err, yeah o.k., didn't think that one through...duh ! Impressive composition and sense of scale, very well done. Thank you for your AoM comments, can't believe I made it ! ~Cheers~

Fabulous capture and motif, Mark. Maybe i remember wrong... this is a lake isn't it? Now it is a frozen lake. Looks very cold. The capture has some kinda fresh looks about it. Fantastic ligh and colors. The tilted horizon provide a funny perspective.

That beach looks so different at this time of year: the last time I was there, some partially naked things were playing volleyball and showing off their non-suntans. This is such a stark, wonderfully austere opposite to that. The snow/ice makes some of the most interesting shapes. I suspect that there's some really super-complicated geological/meteorological process at work there. And then there is that lone walker! WOW! This is an amazing composition and it reminds me of some of the really moving fiction I've read, usually involving cold weather, someone walking, and a city (perhaps alive, perhaps dead) looming in the distance, rather ambiguously. This is a marvel of a shot and I love the quiet mood it has.
