Description

A Kawanishi H8K type 2 large size flying boat, "Emily" to the Allies, assessing the damage to a Gato-class submarine. The Emily is generally considered the best wartime flying boat of WW 2. It was another excellent aircraft design from the Japanese engineers. It boasted excellent long range, speed, a versatile fuel system, and crew compartment armour. Sporting four powerful engines and a deadly array of defensive armament made it not only an effective threat, but a perfect u-boat hunter and deterrent. In addition to the the various bristling guns that earned it the nickname "flying porcupine", the Emily could be fitted with two topedoes or 2205 pounds of bombs and depth charges. Unfortunately, it was never used to its full potential in defending the Empire's merchant fleet, which the Allied decimated by half with little enemy air cover effort to stop it. As the Allies found out in the Atlantic, air cover was paramount in defending their merchant ships. As the Emily is considered a superior aircraft to even the very successful Short Sunderland, the failure to utilize it more in the role of merchant fleet protection amounted in this case not to "too little to late", but "used too little until it was too late". 167 units of this potent aircraft were produced and used for troop transport, recon, and submarine hunting, only one survives today. Kawanishi H8K "Emily": Very nice, much needed model shared for a test spin by Neiwil. Thanks, Neil! Gato class Submarine: USS Trigger standing in for the ill fated craft pictured. Thanks a lot for the great image and the good research done. I didn't know about this plane. Now I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for Neil's imagaes and history. You fellows are fantastic! Beautiful images and fascinating histories of rare planes and other equipment. Keep up the good work! :-) PS - all hand lost? Man, I'd hate to be those fellows orthopedic surgeon! :P

Well done! I have a small criticism about the flames that I don't find enough realistic, but it is a so difficult challenge...

Ah, what can I say- a flying boat! I'll have to have a look at Neil's model- you've used it well here. The H8K made an excellent "staff car" too - and could take an enormous amount of punishment and keep flying. No more assassinations of top Navy brass, eh???
