Description

We have had a pair of Egyptian Geese visit our complex in the last few years. They arrived a few days ago and joined me on my morning walk today. This is the best close up of the 26 photos taken. This male and female pair are identical except one of them has a hole in one of their webbed feet. The Egyptian goose is a native to Africa, south of the Sahara and the Nile Valley and were considered sacred by the Ancient Egyptians. They are 25 to 29 inches (63 to 73 cm) long. Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, and Germany have self sustaining populations which are mostly derived from escaped ornamental birds. Escapes have also bred on occasion in other places, such as Florida and New Zealand. Egyptian geese typically eat seeds, leaves, grasses, and plant stems. Occasionally, they will eat locusts, worms, or other small animals. They prefer to nest in trees and so far we have not found the nest. Some info from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great capture! There's a gang of grumpy geese that hang out at the lake in a park I like to walk around that always try to attack me ;) I don't think they are egyptian, but they are definitely pests!

I think Wiki has this wrong. The Canada Goose is considered a real nuisance in parks, and we have 62 ,000 breeding pairs and 190,000 overwintering birds of those spread over much of the UK. The Egyptian Goose struggles to cope with our cold winters in the few areas where they are wild, such as Norfolk on the East coast. There are only 1,100 breeding pairs and 3,400 UK overwintering birds. An article in the Guardian last May said "The birds are regarded as pests in their native environment in Africa and some are shot because they munch crops, but being grass eaters they are not good to eat. So far there are no reports that the species is a nuisance here." I love this photo, it shows what strange looking birds they are. Fancy them joining you on your walk! I suppose they were expecting a picnic.

Thanks for the correction Andrea - we all have to remember that ordinary people are the ones that upload the data to Wiki.

They are so unusual, at least to me as a US inhabitant; I have only ever seen the Canada geese here in the states. Fun that they were walking with you! Lovely capture!
