Description
Thanks for the input Grey_Cat. As I had stated earlier, the purpose of my Photoshop Action is to get a comic book effect without washing out the render. That's what I wanted to get. I also said I could adjust color balance, contrast, saturation, etc as I needed once the action was run. The third figure is an example of doing just that. As you can see, no brown cast. And yes, you're right, it is flat. I can pull any comic book or graphic novel off my bookshelf right now and voila...flat. Highlights are painted in and although they resemble highlighted areas, they are still flat. Well, not Wonder Woman. Nothing could make her look flat no matter how talented the artist. Also Power Girl. But I get your point. And I think the adjusted third figure in this comparison looks excellent. As for your unlit, lit posting, I think it illustrates perfectly why, in my opinion only, I don't use lights in DAZ. First off, I don't want the realistic look of a non-post worked render. Just not my cup of tea. Also, the lights really created some hard highlights that as a photographer, I would be trying desperately to get those down. They are too bright. And even more importantly, if I need to add something to a scene or figure, and I don't have a 3D model to use or some clothing adjustment is just not available, then if my figures are in "comic book" mode, I can just draw those adjustments/additions in and they won't look like they were just drawn in. They will match the look of the composition and I get a ton of freedom that way. I guess it's whatever floats your boat. If you like the ultra realism look, great. Absolutely go for it. However, it's not what I'm going for. And I have purchased and used most every Photoshop action that has been sold at Renderosity. Some are really good, but all of them still lacked something and so I made this action after much experimentation and in my humble opinion, think it's way better. But again, appreciate the input and opinion.

Very good work - cool comparison are the spots on her face intentional?

Hi Mike. Yeah, the skin texture for this model had freckles.

I think it's a great look. Closest to the comic book style that I've seen.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t use your PS action; it’s probably a pretty good action for getting a comic book effect. I saying not to use a render using DAZ default lighting. You say you don’t use lights in your DAZ render, but if you don’t add lights you’re using DAZ default lights and the default lights really really suck. Using the default lighting is a typical newbe error. The default render is crap there is nothing you can do with it and running it through your action just makes it a lighter shade of crap. Try 2 or 3 colored (not white) distant lights set at 50% intensity just enough to lose the default lighting look then run that render thru your PS action you should have your comic book look but with a little more color. The hard highlight you talk about come from the surface settings not the lights. By setting color in the specular and ambient to black you can rid any hard highlight while retaining the colored highlight. I don’t have a bookshelf full of comic books and graphic novels; my bookshelves are full of books on creating comic books. Todays comic book art is anything but flat a lot of people put a lot time and effort into taking a 2D image and painting it to look like 3D. When I said your render was flat what I meant was that it was flat, dead, lifeless, and lacking any kind sparkle. I think getting away from using the default lighting would help a lot in that end. I don’t think my stuff has a ultra realism look; it’s not what I was going for. I tried to come up with a comic book look, but I gave up because you can’t make something that isn’t hand painted look hand painted. I hope I made my point clear that you do great work but ruin it by using a render using DAZ default lighting. Anyways in the end if your fans are happy and you’re happy who am I to say.

Your action sure does a sweet job. I also like using my own lights in DAZ.
