Description

One of the many opulent exhibit halls at Versailles. For some reason, they wouldn't close the palace to the public & offer me a private tour, so I had to include some fellow tourists in this shot. How inconsiderate of them! Please zoom.

There are always a lot of visitors to the Palace of Versailles, it is not easy to take pictures without them! Superb architecture and excellent capture!

Really inconsiderate, eh? Although I'm sure you could have convinced them with a large enough financial inducement... you got a wonderful view anyway, even with the little people all over the bottom holding it down!

Yeah it sucks that they won't close the place down for your shooting. I am so enamored by your Oregon shots, I was hesitant to leave them, but I had to comment on at least one of your architectural pieces today, since I'm still only doing a handful per session right now. This is a grand shot, Claude. The people add another dimension. A bottom layer of humanity. Mark Twain wrote that he hated Versailles before going there, because of all the people who starved so these huge structures (and gardens) could be built. But once he saw it, he was awed by the sight. The composition is all about the loom of a grand arch, the grand painting below it, all that ornament and opulence, and the power of light and shadows, etc. Your intense shadow is terrific. The lights are very intense too, making all that gold stand out all the more. (The light has a gold tinge around it anyway.) The people actually fit into the scene beautifully, because of all those busts. (Can you imagine having those busts in your living room?) It's so well composed, with such fine attention to light and shadow---the upper arch is really dominating, even as it's recessed in deep shadow. As one who drew and studied architecture for years, I can say this is a terrific capture. And the people make the perfect bottom layer. I think this is a great shot.

A spectacular capture and I can't stand it when the tourists get in the way and seem to just linger forever!
