Description

We pulled into Winchester Bay just as the sun was setting, so naturally I pulled out my camera & headed for the harbor's edge. I'm always disappointed by the loss of subtle color tones when compressing sunsets down to 500kb, but thought this was still worth posting... Please zoom.

What a gorgeous sunset shot; just the right amount of detail, and tons of atmospheric colour. Beautiful!

It is a fine composition with atmosphere. However, this is a shot crying out for a graduated neutral density filter or taking two shots, one exposed for the sky and one for the boats to be combined later in photo shop. You could still keep the boats a bit dark for mood, but either of the other two techniques would have preserved the rich color and detailing of the sky, which I am sure would have survived compression. Otherwise, in photo shop, I would have masked the sky and water and then boosted the exposure of the boats and then gone back in with a burn brush in light and mid-tone range and painted in the sky (and maybe water) to make the details pop. Those are just my suggestions for resolving the problems that you express.

Pretty sunset, flat water surface, all of those boat masts and nice reflections!
