Description
The cannon was originally dedicated and put on a hill in Stone Lake Park in 1932 along with its twin, a cannon of similar make and design. The second cannon was blown up by pranksters 20 years later in 1952.
The remaining cannon was then hidden from view for nearly 80 years by bushes and trees unless passersby trekked up a hill to see it. There it became repeated prey of more pranksters who marred its surface with grafitti.
This photo was taken on the hill in early 2009.
In 2010 volunteers towed it out of the park, repainted it and installed it at the entrance of Soldiers Memorial Park re-dedicating it to the memory of fallen World War I veterans.
Looks best zoomed full size. Thanks for looking & commenting.

We have lots around here but they are never damaged. I think a bit of respect for the past should be shown eh.

it is a shame that there are those who find pleasure in the destruction of other people's property Great capture

a shame it was vandalized, it has a quiet dignity here. And your shot is really well composed, the way it curves around to the lake behind it, and how you have it composed with the ground to the right of it. And the front of the cannon (and the wall beneath it, in shadow). It blends into the trees beautifully. Real dignity in the shot, but also an intimate feeling. Fine work, a monument of gentility in honor of the fallen. I wish more monuments harmonized with their surroundings as well as this does. Captured very caringly.
