The guys don't have to wait very long before the next event shocks them. As they stand around discussing what to do, an elevator ascends out of the ground in front of the middle oak tree. The doors open and a little creature steps out and addresses them. In a rather pleasant but mechanical sounding voice, the creature greets each one of them by their correct name. It doesn't take them long to realize the creature is really some kind of mechanical construct. This really tests the guys nerves. A couple of them turn toward the road in an attempt to run, but the sound of the robot's voice seems to halt them in their tracks. They turn and face the robot and begin to listen to what it is saying. After some explaining, they are still leery of their situation but as the robot continues to explain things to them, they soon overcome some of their fears and begin taking notice of their surroundings. They learn they are no longer on their home planet but have been transported to the main planet of the beings that placed the ad in the paper. They also learn that the beings on this planet use their superior intelligence to travel throughout many of the galaxies in the known universe by folding space. By studying intelligence when they find it, they have expanded their knowledge a great deal over the eons. They have no desire to conquer other planets, but only to share what they have learned along the way with deserving sentients that can be trusted not to exploit this knowledge for their own gains or agendas. These superior beings have been watching the progress of the humans with keen interest for many centuries. They are alarmed at the hostility of the species towards itself and its host planet but also intrigued by the compassion exhibited in times of great stress. Every so often, they select a random sample of humans to interview to determing whether there is any hope the species will reach the point when they are worthy of being granted membership in the intergalactic trust.
