Description

Acrylics, A4 size, January 1990 When I posted "Esprit de la Mer" a while ago, I mentioned that it reminded me of a painting I made 12 years ago. This is that painting. I had just discovered the work of Roger Dean, and this was inspired by a painting of his. I technique I occasionally used at this time was to start with a blank sheet of paper, close my eyes and tickle the surface lightly with a few fast sweeps of a pencil. I would then develop the resulting shapes that were suggested and they would form the basis of the picture. This was I guess the most successful result of this technique. I had just started airbrushing at this time, something I was into for a few years until I eventually lost interest. I had realised that I love texture, and the airbrush was just too pristine. After laying down the blue sky, I failed to completely clean out the airbrush properly before starting the white beams of light. This is why one of the beams on the left is tainted. A lesson learnt, you could say :-) It's still a favourite of mine from that period - one I can still bear to look at, hehehe... my grandparents still have a copy of it on their wall. Thanks for looking :-)

The particular way you evoke water is worth studying. I don't believe I've seen this particular technique before. Also: Your old work with non-electronic image creation seems to follow a different sort of ideas than those you follow now, but they are sought after in a very similar way. I think I am understanding your art better. It has a fascinating personality.

That particular way of evoking water is just a rip-off of Roger Dean, I have to admit. His work is definitely worth a look - it bypasses the logic centres and heads straight for intuitive emotion. He plays mind games.

This is so intense and moving.. the force and the grace untoucheable of the water (a PERFECT water) and the structure so carefully penned which gets the hitting of the waves is shaking till a point I can't name.. Thank you for sharing this: it's amazing :)

I see a humpback whale making her way north, from the ice filled Antarctic, ready to give birth to her calf. The movement is amazing within this image, the underlying composition sending the eye on a swirling journey into the heart of the 'whale' and mirroring the churning waves. Thank you so much for sharing this Jim HUGS

Thanks for pointing me at this, Jim. Always fascinating to see your early works. Not sure if there are any works from my early years I would be willing to show!
