Description

Captured back on 5/29/09, during my first visit to the beautiful Huntington Botanical Center and Conservatory in beautiful San Marino, California. To be more specific, Bonsai, just one section of the beautifully maintained Japanese site at the Botanical Center. Bonsai, literally, plantings in tray, from bon, a tray or low-sided pot and sai, a planting or plantings, pronunciation is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in containers. Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penjing from which the art originated, and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese hòn non bộ. The Japanese tradition dates back over a thousand years, and has its own aesthetics and terminology. Sayonara.

Using the driftwood for the trunk to grow along is a very creative idea. Great shot, Harry.

GOSH! what a strange bonsai. I do love bonsais, thought I wouldnt dare owning one, I am sure I would kill it within a week, just by owning it. Excellent shot :)

On Helle's remark---ie, that she'd kill it if she owned it---my mother had bonsais many times, and not one survived. I guess they take special care. In any case, of all the bonsai shots I've seen, I've never seen one like this! The big chunk of wood looks like driftwood that migrated to this center, and just took up residence. In your capture, it seems like it dropped in, it's so exotic and strange and sweeping. And you give the pot on one end, and the tree on the other, and it almost looks like an art installation rather than a planter. Almost an avant garde shot---because, even though this is how it's displayed, you captured it as a work of art as much as a nature shot. Absolutely fascinating, and eye grabbing. It makes us look several times. Fine job with a very strange and I assume difficult subject.
