Description

Yesterday was a sad day for us, as we went to say goodbye to our dying friend Barbara. She was in her early 80's & had been battling cancer for quite a while. She knew that this time she would not survive it & had accepted it. The last time we saw her a little over a week ago, she was sitting outside with us on a sunny day & doing well, but yesterday she was sedated & not conscious. Despite our sadness at losing our friend, her death happened under the best possible circumstances, given her condition. She was at home, in bed, in her husband Peter's arms, surrounded by her two sons, her daughter, her grandchildren & a lot of love. We came with two of our other mutual friends, one of whom is a professional singer with a beautiful voice who sang a very touching rendition of "Over The Rainbow" for Barbara while we were there. We learned later in the day that she passed away about 15 minutes after we left. She was a joyful & compassionate person who led a full life & it was a privilege to have known her. This photo is of Roman ruins in Arles. This city has a long history & there are lots of old ruins to visit there... Please zoom.

Claude, I'll be commenting here again soon, your French series has been a flow of unending revelations and these ruins are just another example. But I wanted to give you my condolences for your loss, and the loss of others including Barbara's family. Many say that a dying person, even unconscious, knows there is something around them, that loved ones are there and are caring; and she may well have heard your mutual friend's song, and felt the love gliding over her. I'm very sorry, and I wish you all comfort in her loss, and that her loss turn to light for all of you. And I think, as you, yourself, survived cancer, I imagine you feel something dear and strong when you see others suffer from it. And it's odd---this picture of ruins is a fitting tribute: Not because they're "ruins," which Barbara was not (and never will be). But because there's a strange dignity about these structures, a quiet life that's stayed with them so many centuries. But also because you've imparted so much life to them, or, better, drawn out so much of the life that's inside them, as you do in your work overall. Somehow that's right as an offering for your friend. I've quoted it before, but again (from "Sonnet to My Mother" by George Barker), may you move from mourning into morning. My great sympathies. A beautiful upload in her memory.
