Description

The lovely and elegant Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, who makes its home in the south central U.S. states, sports a beautiful extra long forked tail that is most conspicuous when it is flying. A deceptively gray color with bits of salmon pink, it shows it's brilliantly bright orange-red underwing patches when it flies. They are extremely agile using the open scissor-tail technique to make wondrous twists and turns as they catch insects in midair. They like open areas and can often be found perching on fences, poles, and tree branches as they scan the fields and pastures for insects. I've been playing cat and mouse with these guys for weeks, even lost my 1.4x teleconverter when I drove off leaving it on the rear bumper. Argh! Will post a flight shot soon. Clearer in zoom. Thank you for your views and comments, very much appreciated.

Oh Tex, sorry about your 1.4. Not a cheap mistake to make. Mine stays all the time onto the 70-200, even though I have caps and that for it, I just never seem to take it off. I hope you will be able to replace it. What a cracking shot of this most beautiful bird. Keen to see the in flight.

These guys are all over my south pasture, but never come near the house yard. Fantastic birds, aren't they?

Wow, what cool focus in this sensational shot of the elegant swellegant Flycatcher, Maria, sporting a tail longer than its bod. What a beauty. Sorry about your teleconverter. If it's any comfort, I've lost many things in my haste and carelessness when out on photo shoots.
