Description

This is a Mexican Cactus Fly. http://bugguide.net/node/view/9910 http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=15455 It is a subspecies in the family Syrphidae - Syrphid Flies - that would be the family of Hoverflies! When I saw this, I said "Ummmm.... we don't have black bumblebees here - we have large carpenter bees?!" Then I saw the eyes - the eyes of a hoverfly and not a bee, and nearly dropped my camera! Shy little dickens too; he sure didn't want me coming near. He is the size of a BUMBLEBEE, not the size of the tip of your little finger like most of the hoverflies I have photographed! Honestly, you could have knocked me over with a feather! Thanks very much for your views and comments.

You are finding a few strange insects lately Tex, how blessed you are. This is a great shot, and I wished we had those here in England.

OMG, the hoverfly that ate Detroit! What a big mother! Great work on the translucent wings. And you had the right equipment and foto acumen to capture it in this excellent shot, Maria.
