Description

Acrylic (yellow ochre and one of the dark purples), 117x117mm, 17th October 1993 Art college days again (although the roots of this image dated back to nearly a year earlier). I liked mixing together these two colours as a wonderful spectrum of golden browns and ambers can be created. A beauty from dirty colours. It was painted very quickly with stippling and short half-blended strokes - I was checking out Impressionism at the time. The scan was very dull but Auto Contrast in Photoshop was used to restore it. Judicious use of the Auto tools in Photoshop proves extremely useful and can yield nicely unpredictable results. The concept was Brian Eno's 1982 album "Ambient 4: On Land". Its existing album cover is an extreme close-up of a map - totally appropriate to the album's concept but rather emotionless all the same. This painting is what the music pictures to me: a wild landscape at night filled with unseen half-heard creatures. Anyone who knows this album will know the dreamlike essence of what I'm trying to show here :-)

  • ... the light is supposed to convey (if I remember correct) a light that is not quite day or night but simultaneusly both of these things and neither of these things. The music conveys to me night and day, often all at once, half-heard sounds, as in the sounds I sometimes remember from my dreams

I like this one too - don't know the album, but can imagine the feeling easily, looking at this.

you are using only one spectrum colour, and in such small amount of degrees to it, and with so simple lines you really create the space, and a determined "hour of the day" feeling, so you create the Space and the Time perception. It's icredible so few people are paying attention to this. It shows an entire world and a massive talent to me :)

fits the music, subtle sound changes. Of your embrionic works, this one reminds me the most of your latest works.
