Description

2B pencil sketches on A5 sketchpad, 4th-5th November 1993 Fast-forward a bit, onto my first year at art college, a foundation course which was designed to find a direction for us. By this time my pencil technique had come as far as it was going to, and I loved using just one pencil grade for all the tones. With practice I was able to fade completely out to nothing using a very light touch with a pencil blunted to just the right degree. 2B was my favourite, and that's why to this day the 2B pencil in my old set is half the length of the others :-) Of course, studies of your own eyes and hands holding Christmas baubles are Maurits Cornelius Escher through and through. So this was a little homage as well as a sketch. I never did much to this degree of realism, at least not for long. These days I just don't have the patience - I just don't "think" like that anymore. My favourite was a still life from A-level days in 1992, but the school held on to that, something it asserted was standard practice. The real reason will be just so they can put things on the walls to impress visitors. I bet it probably never even got shown - it probably just stayed in the cupboard all these years...

...you'll see I bit my nails then as well... have done since I was a kid. To anyone who wonders why, I propose: "why does a dog chew on a bone?"

I feel many technical comments coming here. This is something that I don't usually have happen to me with your work. Apparently there was a time when the particular techniques you used were similar to my present ones. I'm going to swallow my comments whole, however, and tell you I enjoyed this image.

You really should do more pencil work, Jim. Beautifully rendered and composed, this...
