Description

I rolled into Rosalia (population 590) looking for gas and to see the landmark Texaco gas station built in 1923. It is now the visitor-center for the town so no gas. It did have a curious sign next to it for a visitor- center. As with Palouse, the streets were deserted and almost everything was closed. Walking back to my car I ran into two older locals sitting in front of a bar. They said they were taking a break from their poker game. One was a slender man while his companion was a more "robust" gentleman. If they stood up they looked like the number ten. We spent some minutes in pleasant conversation. It seems small towns like Rosalia don't have much of a future. Popular culture and the Internet have made such places unattractive for most young people. The slender man mentioned that he had moved from Spokane years ago. He couldn't take the noise and crowding. Shortly after he had moved, he told me, his mother had visited him. "Why did you move to such a small town?" "Just listen, mom." "What am I listening for?" "Just listen." "I don't hear anything." "Exactly!" They told me I could fill up the car at a gas station just south of town. As it was 4:00 P.M. on a Sunday it was closed when I got there so I had to keep an eye on the gage until I arrived back at my hotel.

A fantastic treat to see one of these old gas stations - had to laugh at the photo of the sign - I bet it cuts down the amount of travelers that might be looking for information! :o)

We're a friendly bunch up here! Welcome, but don't stay too long! :P There used to be a newspaperman in Seattle named Emmett Watson. He had a column for many years. He hated it that people were moving here willy-nilly, and created a (fictional) organization called "Lesser Seattle." Then there was the poster that pictured the I-5 bridge over the Columbia. In the middle of the bridge is a sign that says, "Welcome to Washington." The poster added, "Californians Use Right Lane." The right lane stopped in the middle of the river. It's a long and time-honored tradition! LOL!
