Description
The hummers stopped coming for some reason in late spring and I'm no longer putting feeders out for them, but in late spring I had an interesting experience with this little female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.
I shot off a burst of continuous shots and noticed how immediately she honed in on the clicky noise that my camera was making. She disappeared quickly, as they do, and I waited for her immediate return, with my eye still against the viewfinder, camera on tripod.
Suddenly I heard this very loud whirring noise by my left ear and pulled my eye back from the viewfinder and saw that she was hovering just a few inches away from my face!! She hovered for maybe 10 seconds and then was off. Her curiosity about me and my camera made for a great moment, which couldn't be photographed but makes for a great memory. :)

when I visited my cousin and his wife in New Mexico last June, the mockingbirds was partaking of their feeder with us sitting right there. it was a very shaded area and I only hand held the camera. I did not get anything this good. I may look at them again to see if I can post any superb action capture

When I was working for the FS my first summer they issued me a Bright Safety Orange hard hat, The others had bare aluminum... During one lunch break I had one circling my head for a couple minutes at about a foot away, First time I'd seen one outside of the Zoo bird houses.... And didn't really expect it in the middle of the North Idaho woods.... and that close.... Think he was trying to figure out where to get his lunch... Excellent shot... and I hope your little friends return soon...

She's a beauty, and what a great portrait! I see pictures of people holding them on their hand, and I'd love to have that experience, but while the ones in my garden are very territorial and will fly around my head when I'm changing the feeders they aren't trusting enough to come sit on me!

Fine photo. I know what you mean about "soft"...during my 3-4 months of "shooting" birds, I discovered how difficult it is even with a tripod to get a sharp enough picture to satisfy me. And I know how you are about sharp:)

Great freeze photo along with a great story, Maria. Being of the female gender, is that why this little girl lacks the signature red pattern of the species around her throat? I see a hummingbird, of any variety, possibly three times a year at the most around my area.

Beautiful capture and sounds like an awesome experience, these are always awesome to watch/see. My brother who lives in Byhalia, MS has a feeder on his back porch and we would sit out there each evening when visiting and sure enough right before the sun went down here they would come three or four of them swarming around the feeder I caught a few captures but none were very clear like this one here, love it, thanks for sharing...:)))
