Description

The date was January 1, 1903. The Delhi Durbar of that year was an extravaganza second to none. The location was on a wide-open plain just outside Delhi, India. The purpose was to celebrate the succession of Britain's King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India. No cost was spared. Maharajas from all over India rode in the grand opening parade on elephants. It was the first time many of them had ever met each other. Numerous colorful units from the Indian Army marched. Countless bands played stirring military marches. Temporary train tracks were installed to bring thousands of Delhi residents to the scene of the festivities. Above we see one of the maharajas passing by the reviewing stand. The only side note is that this parade is made up of hand-made, hand-painted tin soldiers, civilians and their elephants, camels, horses, etc. We have a friend in Texas who sets up his recreation of the Durbar every year over the Christmas holidays. Last year we took our cameras along. Next year I have some better ideas for getting more of the show:)

Fascinating miniature display. I like the way you've focused on the middle ground & created blurred foreground & background - it creates an almost 3D-like depth effect...

I can almost smell the excitement and feel the crowd pressing around me and then discover that someone has stolen my wallet! Wonderful capture

Great shot and love the selective focus. Quite an impressive display your friend has with so many tiny pieces, carefully arranged.
