Description
The Whooping Crane is one of the rarest North American birds on the endangered bird list.
Several decades ago, its population had dwindled to just *16 birds*.
Now in 2015, there are just over 600 whooping cranes, 300 of those on the Texas Gulf Coast.
This capture was taken there from a boat at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Feb. 2007.
Thanks very much for your views and comments.

Stunning image of these rare beauties... We also have a close-to-extinction crane species in Southern Africa called the Wattle Crane. Less than 200 breeding pair left. :(

Lets hope those 16 birds weren't too closely related...

Cool shot taken in 07 of these almost extinct waterfowl, Maria. Their legs are so far apart, perhaps for better balance. Happy to read that they have returned to a more sustainable population.

We were at Aransas in 2013, but didn't see any. We were on land, though. Maybe a boat is the ticket! I'm SO impressed with this shot! First of all that you SAW some, and second that they posed in such a nice way for you. :) Fabulous!

Good that the population has recovered, 600 is much better than 16. An excellent and interesting shot. Thanks for sharing.
