Description

A first sighting of a new bird for me - a Female Golden-Fronted Woodpecker. She has just pulled something out of the bark and you can see it (may need to zoom) from the tip of her beak. I was really surprised when I saw how small their range is, which you can see here on Cornell's website (a bible for birders): http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Golden-fronted_Woodpecker/id You can also see there that the males are more colorful having red and orange patches on their heads. Thank you very much for your views and comments.

Wow, I've never even heard of these; what a beautiful bird! I've had a pileated staking out my suet cakes the last few days, and then yesterday had a male downy there too. Lots of bird activity this time of year! Beautiful shot!

Lovely. Great detail. I've never seen one either but on looking at the range...it is no wonder...and I am sure by the time we are in Texas (November-April), these little guys have hightailed it back to Mexico and Central America for the winter.
