Description
Captured back on 8/3/11, during my last visit to the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific, in beautiful Long Beach, California.
Yes, besides denizens of the deep seas, the aquarium also features such cool avians as lorikeets, puffins, penguins, and ruddy ducks. What with the lack of birds in my area, one has to drive several miles in order to see a good variety of them, albeit captive. In contrast, Maria has all types in her own back yard.
Lories and lorikeets (tribe Loriini) are small to medium-sized arboreal parrots characterized by their specialized brush-tipped tongues for feeding on nectar of various blossoms and soft fruits, preferably berries. The species form a monophyletic group within the parrot family Psittacidae.

These guys are most sociable, and will eat directly out of your hand.
Instead of the cooler weather promised us for today, it hit a nice bright and sunny 104.4 Fahrenheit/40.2 Celsius degrees in my patio. And, here I was, all set to wear a sweater after all of these insanely hot months.
Toodles.

What a beautiful bird! I'd be tempted to hang out there all the time and feed them, and hopefully manage to smuggle one out in my pocket---well, not really, but it's fun to imagine sometimes. Fantastic shot, and I'm sorry the sweater had to be abandoned!
