Description
I stumbled upon this synagogue while wandering around Prague on my own one night. It's on a fairly narrow street & I had to back up as far as I could on the opposite side of the street to get this view of it. I regret that I didn't go back to see it (& to visit the inside) during the daytime.
Some info about it:
"Jubilee Synagogue, also known as the Jerusalem Synagogue, is a synagogue in Prague, Czech Republic. It is also known as the Jerusalem Synagogue because of its location on Jerusalem Street. It was built in 1906, designed by Wilhelm Stiassny and named in honor of the silver Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The synagogue is designed in Moorish Revival form with Art Nouveau decoration, especially in the interior. It was lately renovated and still serves religious purposes. Since Czechoslovakia became independent in 1918, it has been called the Jerusalem Synagogue as the name Jubilee Synagogue referred to the anniversary of the rule of Franz Joseph I in the defeated Austro-Hungarian Monarchy."

a photo emphasizing radiating light, pouring out from deep shadows. (Moorish Revival goes back to the amazing age of Moorish architecture which flourished in Spain some centuries earlier. Mudejar is the style you see in those dark and bright stripes---they should be red and yellow, but I can't tell from the shadows here. It's stunning in the shot, all the same, and it graced some extraordinary Jewish structures in Southern Spain a few centuries earlier.) Your shot emphasizes the 'soar' of the place; and the impact of its golden light. Strange to Jews of my grandfather's generation to see such lavishness on a synagogue, esp to see a Jewish star where one would normally see a Rose Window; my grandfather (from the Jewish shtetls/villages just outside Minsk) would see this and say, "such a big to-do!!!!" (He wasn't used to such facades.) This shot is about stunning light; while enough detail comes across to communicate opulent design...and Moorish genius. A very compelling shot, Claude.

Wonderful scene

How beautiful it is! Hard to do it justice without a fistful of lenses and tripods and light meters, but you got the feeling of it, and that magical glow.

A superb photo!, In my town the synagogues are locked because of vandalism, and if you want to attend a service as a visitor you must phone first. I have been on a guided tour and talk of the liberal one, fascinating.

Having come from Long Island, I can almost hear Mark's grandfather saying, "Such a big to-do!!!!" But what gorgeous, radiant light. Tara and I have Prague on our travel bucket list. Maybe we can visit here and check out the indoor view. A striking and memorable composition.
