Description

This is the tomb of Amelia Goyri de la Hoz, known as “La Milagrosa” (The Miraculous One), who died during childbirth on May 3, 1901, at the age of 23. The baby boy did not survive either. She was buried in the tomb with her son placed at her feet. Overcome with grief, her husband José would visit every day and knock three times on her tomb begging her to wake up. Eventually he was committed to an asylum and died there a few years later. The legend tells that when the grave was opened some time afterwards Amelia showed no signs of decay and the child was in his mother’s arms. The tomb was resealed and has been left that way until this day. Local Cubans now come and offer their prayers for safe pregnancies and return with flowers and prayers to thank her for a safe birth. The statue of Amelia and her baby were added in 1914.

I've never been to Central or South America, but I've sure been impressed with the immensity of their lore, myth, cultures, etc. And, being one of our great voices for the world around us, you brought a piece of that immensity to us here. I love the legend. And your shot is spectacular: You have her head emerging out of the trees and into the sky. You have the cross canopied by those foreground leaves (fine choice). And, where we think the shot will end---it doesn't: I plunges down into a big arena of detail: The stones, the inscriptions, the beautiful flowers above and below (really vivid hues on these, esp striking considering how much gray there is all around); and it ends in a slanted fence which flows by like a river, and a statue of a young girl, who's in shadow as if in mourning from what's behind her. Your shot has an epic feel; and even without the story, it would flood us. Terrific shot, Mark. You don't just shoot monuments, you dive in to wrest what's inside them...
