Description
José Vicente Adot y Rabell and Amelia Goyri de la Hoz met as teenagers and fell in love. But her father did not approve of their romance and they were kept apart. José joined the struggle for independence from Spain in 1895. By the time he came home Cuba was free and Amelia’s father had died. They were married in the summer of 1900 and had one year of happiness until she died in childbirth.
Looking at Amelia’s tomb I noticed what appeared to be a large number of headstones in front of it. Upon closer inspection they turned out to be offerings in granite and marble thanking her for her help.
“Amelia de madre a madre gracias de todo Corazon.” (Amelia from mother to mother heartfelt thanks.)
“Gracias por escuchar mis uegos, hoy soy feliz junto a mi niña.” (Thank you for hearing my prayers today, I am happy with my little girl.)
There is even one in English, “Thanks Amelia for granting my wish.”
Such is the power of faith.

another of your very humane and always informative uploads...and what a collection this is: deeply personal messages carved on granite and marble! If there's someone here who will find these things for us, it's you. For which your fans remain grateful. As a shot, it's a big pile-up of rectangular plagues, all facing one direction like spectators at an event. So much light in each slab, with that diagonal wall on the left for pictorial balance. A kind of riot of messages, I really like the shot. As a capture of humanity, it's very touching. And a fine follow up to the larger upload before this, Mark.

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed touring this cemetery with you! The grand tombs, the heroic statuary, the monuments ... it's a beautiful place. I love cemeteries. Bill and I stop at the cemeteries we come across whenever we can, just to wander around and enjoy the peace and quiet and to read headstones. We invariably make little discoveries. Seeing such a magnificent place with a guide must have been a mixture of delight and frustration! I could look at pictures like this all day long. Thank you for letting me come along with you on this trip! I'm looking forward to more ... :)

Just went and read about Amelia...she, known as the miraculous one...and treated as a saint by many who believe her story. What a fascinating aside in this huge cemetery. The plaques speak loudly of admiration. Many thanks for the look-see.
