Description

My favorite thing about bird photography is getting to see the details lesser seen when a bird is in the yard, in the tree, or flying through the air, all too far away to notice the little things. When seen closer, one gets to see postures, behavior, mannerisms, interaction with other birds, movement in freeze frame, positions and expression. They become much more creatures that have real personality, attitude and emotions than "just a bird". I got to see this bird up close at the nature center. I took a picture of the same species of bird out in the country and posted it in my gallery earlier this past summer. But what I couldn't see from such a distance was the fascinating feather display and color patterns. Notice that perfect cross hatching of feather barbules in the upper right section. Nature is amazing in its detail and design. I have several pics to show, but can you guess what bird this is??? Thanks very much for your views and comments.

This is such stunning photography, Maria. I'm in aw how sharp and beautiful these feathers look. After long thinking I just guess something about the bird: A jay(?)

Boy, can I ever see the cross-hatching here! It's like it's the "original" cross-hatching, as if all artists owe the technique to birds. With Andrea, this is a real treat. I know you've been doing expert bird photography for a long while (I've seen your gallery long before I started commenting on it), and it's a treat when you zero-in on the things like this. For that handful of you who do exquisite animal work, thank god for zoos and conservatories, because they allow you to do these studies at your leisure. In zoom, this is beautiful---nature's own glorious abstract. And there are many hues here too---not just browns and beiges, but blues and some blacks, etc. A patchwork. Thanks for posting this, I'm due for another mutli-pic session here...this is beautiful, Maria.

(Oh, and do I know what bird it is? Well as anyone here will tell you, my knowledge of species, genus's and so on, is pitiful. I've heard of Oak trees and Roses. Maybe a Robin...But your dyed-in-the-wool fans may know. It's a wonderful shot, regardless...)

First off, I don't know what bird this is....some kind of Australian avian? The feather array looks so massive I can't think of an American equivalent. An emu, waterfowl, or ostrich? Otherwise, immaculate patterns and textures in this remarkable image, Maria; such fine definition, unequaled in its clarity and contrast.

It's got some peacock colors in but I'm sure it's not. Wonderful details of the feathers Maria.

No idea of ID, but wow! What a spectacular closeup of these feathers! I'm wowed by that crosshatching, I could get lost in it!

I missed this when first posted, but saw it in the LWITG post & it immediately caught my eye. You've turned this closeup of feathers into a wonderful abstract composition. I probably would have guessed white peacock, but I've already discovered that I would have been (not surprisingly) wrong...

I looked at this the other day when you posted it, and just got lost in all the detail. What a spectacular shot! The cross-hatching you mentioned, the variations in color ... it's stunning!
