Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Fantastic shot. I like the green and blue tones and especially the bird.

if you get delight and power, etc, then the rules work for you...I love the boldness of this shot, and Iove that bird! (everyone here's gonna know what bird this is, but not me) (he's "white") I love him just standing there amongst all the rushing waters; and the strict layers of your shot just work for me. And I like the lush vegetation back there, and he's centered right with that center tuft; and he's standing on---what---a coagulation of grasses and other river detritus. I really like that, Andrea And there's something funny about him, too---I mean this in a totally positive way: He looks like a comic actor trying to be serious. Maybe it's the slight 'smirk' in his beak...Well, it's wonderful, and wonderful for Bill: delightful and sweeping, which covers several of bill's fine traits. Also, (I have it from private sources) the bird was born on Long Island, and says "New Yawwk". Delightful piece, Andrea, for a delightful person. Happy Birthday, Bill!!
(and btw---I don't know if I wear age well, but 2 years ago, age came in the door, threw down its bags, moved in, and hasn't left since. And it doesn't offer rent, it doesn't clean up, it doesn't do ____...but from everything I know about Bill, he just defies age. I think he's younger, at 75, than I am at 66, and frankly it's very upsetting...)

Oh, the heck with the rules... you capture art as you see it...and this is fabulous! The greens and the blues to contrast the heron are to die for! Fabulous running water and his perch is perfect!

Those colours are amazing! I love that luminous water under the watchful heron. Gorgeous shot!

Joyeux anniversaire au milieu de cette agitation de couleur et de courant qu'est la vie...

Wow what a gorgeous picture/ the blues and greens are amazing.
Looks like the heron is posing for you.
Awesome camera work and beautiful Birthday didi for your friend Andrea.

You know what it is? Standing on that little rise he looks stranded. And the black patch on his head makes him look bald. A perfect image for Bill. Some humor, the big picture rather than close up detail (that's Tara) and a beautiful natural scene. Nice work.

Thanks Andrea. Yup, that's me...just standing around waiting for my next meal:-) I also like to keep my feet dry and my clothes neat just like this sleek heron. Well, my clothing standards have slipped a bit, from the old days of uniforms, suits, ties and shiny shoes, but blue jeans and flip-flops make for a better retirement wardrobe anyway. Loved all the comments above...but what's with Mark wysiwig's comment about the bird looking bald? I've still got a full head of hair. lol.

LOL! I'm thrilled to have come late to this party and got to see everyone's comments. :) I love the greens and blues of course ... all the layers of color ... it's totally satisfying to me. The bird is just a bonus!
Don't let Bill kid you. Even in jeans and a t-shirt, he looks terrific. I have pictures of him in uniform from "before," but he rocks retirement!! :)
