Description

My wife is always saying I like anything that moves and makes noise. Well this 1923 road roller fills the bill. At least it used to move...probably not anymore:) I remember when I was a boy my parents talked of steam shovels, steam rollers and iceboxes (among many other things), but those terms were anachronisms by the 1940s. Internal combustion engines had replaced steam engines and electricity put the iceman out of business. But this road roller is a transitional machine...it has a large gasoline engine but a fake smoke stack added purely for marketing purposes...people in 1923 still expected steam rollers.

Huh. I don't think I ever saw this. Well, it certainly does meet all your requirements! LOL! Leave it to you to know the stack was fake. I never would have thought about its purpose at all, let alone had (or could find) additional information. Glad you got to see such a thing! :)

Seems to me it has way more parts than it probably needs! What a cool collection of very yellow and rusty metal pieces!

I love the machine, and how parts of it are resting against a back wheel. And its decay, and age, and rust-colored rollers. But I also love your treatment---man, you went for the sun on this one! This baby's radiating for miles around, in a heavy duty yellow; and contrasted by that deep brown in the right, and that deep sea-blue sign (for Standard Oil, a name long gone from our world), and the wonderful detail on all the parts around the machine, and that shed in the left background...I love the whole milieu, and that you chose to allow the "star" to shine like this, making its smokestack to stand out, with what appears to be a face on the front, with one fake eyebrow on top. Love it, a real shouting joyous and glorious mess, shot to allow its 'messiness' to sing in our faces! If I left things looking like that, when I was a kid, you'd hear my mother shouting, "MAAAAAAARK?????" (Meaning, clean it up NOW! Or no dinner.) You didn't shy away from anything in this dance-number shot!

And with the tiniest bit of deferred maintenance she's ready to go. What a fantastic find. I love anything vintage. They used to make them to last and the craftsmanship was obvious. You've captured a real standout here.

Well that's interesting, because we still had steam rollers working on the roads laying new Tarmac until I was about ten, which was in 1954! They belonged to a Poole company called Trinindad Lake Ashphalt.

Steam rollers came down our road when I was a kid.
Great old piece of machinery, once very much used.

Oh my goodness, can you imagine the time and money to restore this thing? o.0 Finding parts would be a nightmare...but what a find for you and great shot, Bill.

I have a printer at work pretty much in this state - in pieces! LOL Maybe in another 70 years or so it will be as lovely as this old roller - but I doubt it!

What an awesome find and great photo, Bill! Just tell Tara it's a 'guy thing.' This looks like a place I'd like to spend some time in - so many visual goodies!

Happy Birthday, BTW! You get younger every year!

LOL in re Mark's comment. Great capture of the old timer...I'm almost as old as that jumbled mechanism. And, Happy Veterans Day, from one to another.
