Description

Just down from the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis convent was an open space where a woman was selling books. Many people in Havana are, as the government likes to call them, 'self employed'. Others supplement their day-to-day jobs with other means. Her offerings leaned heavily on revolutionary heroes with the majority about Che Guevara. However, way over at center right is one titled "The Mafia in Havana". That's one I'd like to read.

first, Mark, for some reason this image is posted twice in your gallery. Identical image and description...maybe it will go away on its own, or maybe our comments will show up simultaneously in both places...but I thought you'd want to know. RR does this occasionally, and I have no idea why. It's happened to me twice...

This is another fine street shot from you. You got a quizzical, interested but slightly guarded look on this woman---a moment that makes for fine people shooting. ("Street shooting" is really a vague term, so maybe 'unposed people shots' is better.) And you captured her to one side, allowing her books to spread-out before her, as if showing themselves off. It's really a good shot, Mark, really well cropped, and 'honest', with her somewhat guarded glance at her photographer. And all that light on the books, enhanced by the cellophane wrapping on them. Fine work, Mark. A really fine street capture.

(On the titles---you're right, a lot on revolutionary figures! Including some you've captured via monuments, in your gallery. And yeah, "The Mafia in Havana" is a standout. I see some poetry---gotta look hard, lol---and a few other oddities, Hemingway, Meyer Lansky ((!!!)), etc. I take it Havanans are either curious about, or resentful of the Mafia's infiltration into their city. A most unusual collection. A really fine shot.) (I'll post this in both uploads, in case they remove one 'all of a sudden'...ya never know with the new rr...)

The Many Moods of Che Guevara. I particularly like the smiling, relaxed Che next to the serious and revolutionary Che. The bookseller doesn't mind what's there ... it's nothing to her whether Che was happy or serious ... she's just selling books. What a great shot!
