Description

Havana has its share of public art. It ranges from the classic ‘Man on Horseback’ to ultra-realism to the latest in modern art. Antonio Gades (14 November 1936 – 20 July 2004) was a Spanish flamenco dancer and choreographer. He helped to popularize the art form on the international stage. He was also a prominent activist for Catalan independence and a committed Communist. If you are ever in Havana stop by and say hello. You can find him hanging out in the Plaza de la Cathedral in Old Havana.

lol, Andrea. Your crop zeroes in on him and the pillar, leaving the right third as balance. It's a 'classical' shot, and I like it very much. You got just the right proportions. And you got lots of light on him, so we can really see the metal, how it was cast, and where it's been worn. Fine detail! A sensitive capture of a sculpture, Mark. Fine work.

(I dreamt of being a flamenco guitarist, I mean I dreamt of it the way some dreamt of being Micky Mantle, and though I played guitar a tad better than a monkey, I studied with a flamenco teacher for about 6 lessons. I stopped for fear of bringing the art form down for centuries, and because my teacher almost wept. But when you bite into those strings, it's really visceral stuff. You may know that there were a few short films with Gades in it, by Carlos Saura, who also made a full-length film on the subject, though I don't know if Gades was in that. I saw flamenco in my only visit to spain, and I got the feeling that their clubs were like night clubs only for flamenco---small, cloistered, dark and very intense. Maybe you've seen some in your travels through the years...Finally ((off topic)), re your funny and true-to-life Seder story, my mother would cry almost exactly what your brother cried, when we were finally able to drink the wine. She made her matzo balls extra hard to get back at my father, who loved the service. She called them "Seder Titleists"...I'll post a picture one of these days...)

As long as he's not one of those living-statue/mime guys - they freak me out lol! Great capture Mark and I've wanted to go to Cuba for years!

I love that casual, natural pose. I'll bet women stand next to it with their arm through his and have their picture taken. And the bold ones (as Andrea mentioned) might be a bit more ... well ... bold. :P
