Description

More fun with hair. Same set and character as the previous image. This one uses a dielectric material for the hair, which is Keyshot's complex glass material. Since hair is not a "metal" I'd thought I'd give PhilW's suggestion a try. It doesn't have the complex specular model of the Metal Paint shader, but it does have dispersion and less opacity. I really like the effect, though it's not really accurate and varies wildly by lighting. I can definitely see using either this shader or the metal paint version depending on the look of the hair and the scene's lighting. All CGI hair is a fake (hair is just too complex, blonde hair even more so) and I'm okay with these results. Thanks for looking and putting up with the mess in my laboratory! Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I really like the "depth" that your shading provides. Lovely render.

Interesting experiment (and thanks for trying it!). I like the softness compared to the metal, but the colours look a little strange, is that picking up colours from the environment?

The hair color comes almost completely from light interactions and dispersion/refraction within the 100,000 fibers. The environment itself is just a black and white gradient. It gives a really great lustre and softness, though. The trade-off is that the coloring is hard to predict.

I think the hair looks great. You're right about the color though, as it certainly has a caustic look to it.
