Description
With the RAF moniker "Tiffie", the pugnacious in your face chin and stalwart build Hawker Typhoon seems ill-named. Envisioned and intended as a fast, high altitude interceptor the Typhoon never lived up to its builder's intent. It had a slow rate of climb, and performed poorly at high altitudes. It was nevertheless pressed into service in the face of the very successful low-level Fw-190 attacks and proved itself remarkably suited to the mid and low altitude dual role of fighter/ground attack. At around 400 mph, the Typhoon proved a hefty deterrent to the 190 attacks and was very successful in meeting the German attackers in their own operating envelope.
Although the Typhoon had a myriad of problems to overcome, from power plant to cockpit, it still made a very favorable show in its role against the German supply lines and in ground troop support and front line advances. The story of the Hawker Typhoon is an excellent example of a failed purpose-design that was recognized and utilized in its surprising strong suit to great advantage for the RAF.
