Description
Once Upon A Time;
An already old aircraft took off on a seemingly impossible bombing mission.. It was codenamed 'Black Buck One'.
It then flew refuelled by 11 also already old aircraft (Victors) all the way to The Falklands, found a small runway at night with 1960's radar against modern missile systems and bombed it, then flew home..
It stands as the longest bombing mission still.. (The US have clocked a longer one but with forward based refuelling aircraft)..
This man is Flight Lt Martin Withers, the pilot of that mission..
He gave the commentary to XH558's very last public airshow at Shuttleworth.. What a surprise and an honour.. He is being interviewed by PlanesTV here..
Respect due.. A Legend..

Nothin' better than an old RAF rudder and stick man! Hope you got to shake this hero's hand!

Truly a legend - an amazing bombing mission that was! I know the B2s have flown missions from here in Missouri all the way to Syria/Iraq, but as you said, with forward bases for the tankers to fly out of.
A great shot of this hero, Rob!

I have followed the history of the Falklands campaign in both print and ebook form as augmented by the Harrier Squadron Association. (Jerry Pook's book)
