Description
(This is huge...much better full. Otherwise it kinda looks like a 'scrapbook'...)
This is for Ana (anaber). Or, as some of us like to call her, 'dearest Ana'.
I've been friends with Ana for several years. We met in 2008, on the 2D Forum. She's so dear to me, it seems like it's been forever. She's been through a huge amount; but, as everyone who knows her knows, she'll give you everything she has to make you feel better, and support and give you her love. I've said it before, but she fought years back to bring democracy to her land, when Salazar had iron control of Portugal. She fought to empower women in that terrible time. She risked a great deal. She raised two wonderful children---now with their own children (Ana's a grandmother of two now! Including the newborn Álvaro!). And she's done so much for her husband and family, and for the people she loves everywhere else. In situations where I'd be ready to scream and storm out, Ana showed so much understanding. There's a reason Helle and I call her "our dear Ana"...And she's an artist who makes me think I'll never do another drawing again, lol: She's that good. Yet, she's right there, supporting my work, encouraging me, praising and helping: That's Ana.
Helle and I often write, "did you see Ana's latest portrait?" And we conclude that we'll never make a portrait like that! And Ana does it in her spare time! (She'll do it in coffee shops.) She paints timeless faces and dancing figures and magic apparitions...and her cartoons are from the deepest folklore, with dancing figures against a deep blue sky, reaching across the world to make a connection. And passionate "blacks"---as she calls them---ie, her heavy ink works which are like flamenco performances in intensity and fire. And beautiful bold photography of Lisbon, and so on...
I adore Ana, and I'm so grateful she's in my life. Ana: I add this piece to the other beautiful art you've received today: It starts with an old Geode drawing which I've totally transformed. Geodes are rocks on the surface, but a treasure chest inside (a bed of crystals). I'm not saying you're a rock outside but a jewel inside: But, rather, that you go through the "rock of life" and you find the jewels inside it: Jewels forged of passionate flames, like your heart and soul...And, as Chanukah is tonight, I tried to make a festival of lights. May your next year bring you light and joy, and all the love there is. Happy Birthday, dear Ana! And many, many more, with love, humility and the deepest gratitude, Mark
(again, much fuller in zoom...)

Just to get down to the nitty-gritty: Geodes (ge-ōdēs,"earthlike") are geological secondary structures, which occur in certain sedimentary and volcanic rocks. They are themselves of sedimentary origin formed by chemical precipitation. Geodes are essentially hollow, vaguely spheroid to oblate masses of mineral matter that form via either of two processes: by the filling of vesicles (gas bubbles) in volcanic to sub-volcanic rocks by minerals deposited from hydrothermal fluids or by the dissolution of sedimentary nodules or concretions (that were deposited syngenetically within the rock formations in which they are found) and partial filling by the same or other minerals precipitated from diagenetic water, groundwater or hydrothermal fluids. That said, a very colorful and somewhat kaleidoscopic a llittle-of-this-and-a-little-of-that BD dedication for your friend, anabar.

Very nice dedication and write-up. Geodes are cool. I like the mystery of what's inside.

This is such a beautiful piece, and the first thing I saw was Ana's shining heart and soul. I don't know her nearly as well as you do ... we connect from time to time in passing ... but every bit of contact I have ever had with her has been loving and embracing and beautiful. I think you've done a portrait of Ana, after all. Light and love shining from inside, spreading out to everything and everyone she touches. It's a lovely gift, and a heartfelt and moving dedication.

That's all well and good, Mark, but tell us how you really feel. {;->
A spectacular gift for Ana, full of fire and light. I can imagine the bottom panel representing the formation of the geode in volcanic ash and as it cools becomes the image at the top filled with texture and brilliant color. And I can see a figure in the center with large elf ears. A lot going on here and outstandingly well done.

OOOOoooooooo, look at the colors! I looked at the full-size version, and it just pulled me right into the image! Wow! It was a little rough getting back out of the monitor, but I did with just enough energy left over to type a comment! :-D
All these wonderful, cheerful colors really liven the room up,- who needs all those strings of lights when you have this! A most delightful work, Mark!

Wow, such vibrant beautiful colors and design, and your dedication to Ana was wonderful. I took some time to go through her gallery and loved her work, especially her amazing portraits. The ones she did of you are just beyond words ... they are the essence of you, and done with such love. All the layers in this vibrant image for Ana seem very fitting for a lady of many layers and depth who seems to enjoy all the colors of life with such joy. It is indeed a celebration of Ana.

Mark:)!! i read a thousand times what you wrote! And I fainted at least 3 times. I blushed another thousand times and i thought another thousand: ‘‘I DON’T DESERVE THIS MUCH!! I DON’T DESERVE THIS!!’’ I felt like having a cork in the mouth, lol! Or like being a ‘fat chicken’ as we say here:)
I dont know how to respond to you:) hardly i will find right words, but what i will say is straight from my heart:) and I am so thankfull, because you think all this well of me...and you say it all, with all your heart and from your soul, i know! And i only can be soooo happy:) !!...and yes, like Tara said...my heart is shining like the crystals of the geodes:) and indeed, Mark, is great that i have the honor that you call me friend and i am blessed because you are and always will be part of my life:) i even can say, that you are family to me and i think that this, is beautiful. YOU are a golden heart and a treasure to me and to all that know YOU!! You are loved for everyone! And you deserve it till the core! And i am so thankful because i found RR:) otherwise, i never would known you and Helle and others that hopefully still are here as well as others, that are not, but that i never will forget, because they were so dear to me! RR gave me something very Special ! And if i am in certain circunstances a bit conservative and a ‘old bone’ i am a ‘baby cry’ also...and it is somehow hard for me, to let go RR...and this, is the main reason.
OK, dearest Mark:)!! You brought me to tears with what you wrote, but i smile inside out however, of course! though i want you to know and all the persons that read what you wrote, that i really would like to be** ONLY! ONLY!** 10% of what you said that i was, because it would be already a wonderful amount! lol !!! as for the 'testament' that i write, well !! haha ! everybody can call me 'maluca', with all the reasons:) and forgive me...
But Mark :) You really did a festival of light and color in this image! I have been read a bit about Geodes and i read that It can take hundreds of millions of years to fill completely - **what a long journey!! **
In reality, it is a miracle of our earth’s creation. Geodes, speaks about LIFE...the formation of the crystals grows from the walls toward the center of the rock and under different temperatures, the colours of the minerals change and the purple transforms into many others colours. It is exactly what i see along all the image, and at bottom i find a real feast of warm and joyful colors and LIGHT! A FESTIVAL indeed! And you related it with ‘Chanukah’ the ‘festival of light’ that begun in the '6' . I looked up at it and I read about the story of chanukah and the candle that miraculously stayed alight for eight days and i understood much better the meaning and the importance of the menorah candle also!
I also read how ‘Geode’ is explained for children. It is a wonder; When the Geode is filled and ready, it splits, the story says: ‘’ From within come brand new wings of a brand new thing’’ and we can see childhood drawing of a wonderful bird: called the ‘Bitaba Bird’. And it is how ‘Creation’ was explained for children, simply and without any connections, allowing freedom of thought:) and i realized how EVERYTHING could be explained ! Simply! And in your image of Geodes i can see all this, Mark and i also can connect with the ‘yin-yang’ . Why? Because ‘yin - yang’ are forces complementaries and they explain the duality of everything that exists in the Universe-as day and night/ cold and heat- they are oposite, but as they exist in everything and they complement, they rule the all the mutations and all the movements with a dinamic equilibrium. In a cosmic way. And this, is there, in your image also and you depicted it so well in the ‘3 steps’ where you explained how you built the image...( but i would like a lot to see the 50:)!)
Mark. Your image is a GREAT GIFT! AND A LESSON...This image speaks about the misterious beauty of the Creation ; touches deeply the Secrets of Nature and the Mistery of Life. You offered me a treasure ! You couldn’t find a better gift to me. Maybe i wrote a lot of confusions... and i am sorry also because i wrote a testament...but i felt all this and wanted to honor your Gift as it and you deserve and to show You, that i could understand the depth of the ‘geode’ that you drew. Thank you Mark:) And as i am very late in my thanks to you, for your wonderful words and this wonderful image, at least i wanted to write this, before the Chanukah had ended ! And i also want to thanks all the persons above, that commented this gift to me! Have a great and beautiful week ahead and thank you very much again:)
